Speedster Mustafizur Rahman bagged five wickets on his debut as Bangladesh recorded a sensational 79–run victory over India in the first ODI at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
Mustafiz and fellow fast bowler Taskin Ahmed wreaked havoc through the star-studded Indian top order on the day as the visitors came second best against a spirited Tigers side.
Chasing Bangladesh’s total of 307, India did make a bright start, but Taskin struck twice in two overs to dash India’s hopes.
He made both Shikhar Dhawan (30) and Virat Kohli (1) give catches behind the wicket and man-of-the-match Mustafiz made sure the visitors do not come back stronger.
Mustafiz’s sensational form not only baffled the Indian batsmen, but also made MS Dhoni lose his senses, as the Indian skipper collided with the bowler when he could have avoided it.
The speed prodigy was out of the field for a while, but he soon returned to grab three more to make it a five-for.
Opener Rohit Sharma was the top scorer for the guests with 63 runs, while Suresh Raina (40) and Ravindra Jadeja (32) also tried to offer some resistance.
Taskin and Shakib Al Hasan bagged two wickets each while skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza took one. Wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim, who made only 14 with the bat, also played his part, taking five catches.
Earlier, openers Soumya Sarkar and Tamim Iqbal laid the perfect foundation while the middle-order batsmen made the best use of that as Bangladesh posted 307 losing all wickets in 50 overs.
Thursday’s score is the Tigers’ highest ever total against their neighbours, surpassing their previous best of 296/6, also made in Dhaka in 2010.
Winning the toss, Mashrafe opted to bat first, a decision well vindicated by his openers, and then by his bowlers as well.
Soumya was in a fiery mood, making 54 in just 40 balls courtesy of eight fours and a six. The left-handed batsman was unfortunate to fall victim to a run out, but his fellow opener Tamim also hit a half century. The Chittagong lad’s 60 came in 62 balls thanks to seven fours and a six. It means the hard-hitting opener has scored at least 50 in four consecutive matches.
Mushfiqur Rahim and debutant Litton Das then fell cheaply, but Shakib (52) and Sabbir Rahman (41) made 83 in the fifth wicket to keep the hosts going.
The Tigers also had Nasir Hossain and Mashrafe to thank for the big score as the former blasted 34 in 27 balls while the latter hit 21 off 18 balls to take Bangladesh to their first ever over 300 total against India.
Ravichandran Ashwin was the most successful bowler for India, picking up three wickets while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav grabbed two each.

আর মাত্র সাড়ে তিন মাস। এরপরই ঠিক হয়ে যাবে, কারা খেলবে ২০১৭ আইসিসি চ্যাম্পিয়নস ট্রফিতে। আর বাংলাদেশ এই আসরে খেলার অন্যতম দাবিদার হিসেবে আছে। স্বাগতিক ইংল্যান্ডসহ ৩০ সেপ্টেম্বর ২০১৫ এর ওয়ানডে র‍্যাঙ্কিংয়ের ওপর ভিত্তি করে বাকি সেরা সাতটি দল পাবে চ্যাম্পিয়নস ট্রফি ২০১৭তে খেলার সুযোগ। বর্তমান ওয়ানডে র‍্যাঙ্কিংয়ের সেরা ছয়টি দলের এই আসরে খেলা অনেকটা নিশ্চিত। ঝুলে আছে শুধু ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজ, বাংলাদেশ এবং পাকিস্তান। আর এই তিন দলের দুটিকে চ্যাম্পিয়নস ট্রফি নিশ্চিত করতে হবে নানা সমীকরণের মধ্য দিয়ে। 
বর্তমান ওয়ানডে র‍্যাঙ্কিংয়ে ৮৮.৪ রেটিং পয়েন্ট নিয়ে সাত নাম্বারে আছে ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজ, ৮৮.২৫ রেটিং পয়েন্ট নিয়ে আট নাম্বারে আছে বাংলাদেশ এবং ৮৭ রেটিং পয়েন্ট নিয়ে নয় নাম্বারে আছে পাকিস্তান। এ বছরের ৩০ সেপ্টেম্বরের মধ্যে ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজের কোনো ওয়ানডে সিরিজ নেই। তাই সবাইকে তাকিয়ে থাকতে হবে বাংলাদেশ এবং পাকিস্তানের ওয়ানডে সিরিজগুলোর দিকে। এ সময়ে বাংলাদেশ ভারতের বিপক্ষে খেলবে ৩ ম্যাচের ওয়ানডে সিরিজ এবং দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকার বিপক্ষে খেলবে ৩ ম্যাচের ওয়ানডে সিরিজ।
ওদিকে পাকিস্তান ৫ ম্যাচের ওয়ানডে সিরিজ খেলবে শ্রীলঙ্কার বিপক্ষে। যেহেতু ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজের কোনো ম্যাচ নেই, তাই ওদের রেটিং পয়েন্ট ৮৮.৪ ই থাকবে। এখন বাংলাদেশ যদি ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজের আগে চলে যেতে পারে তাহলেই চ্যাম্পিয়নস ট্রফি নিশ্চিত। ভারত এবং দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকার বিপক্ষে ৬ ম্যাচের যেকোনো ২টি ম্যাচ জিততে পারলেই ৮৯.৮ রেটিং পয়েন্ট নিয়ে চ্যাম্পিয়নস ট্রফির টিকেট পেয়ে যাবে বাংলাদেশ। তখন আর পাকিস্তানের দিকে তাকাতে হবে না। তবে বাংলাদেশ আরও বেশি ম্যাচ জিতলে র‍্যাঙ্কিংয়ে নিজেদের অবস্থানটাই শক্তিশালী করতে পারবে।
কিন্তু বাংলাদেশ যদি ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজের চেয়ে পিছিয়ে থাকে তখন? বাংলাদেশ ৬ ম্যাচের মধ্যে যদি শুধু একটিতে জয় পায়, তাহলে ৮৬.৯ রেটিং পয়েন্ট নিয়ে ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজের পেছনে থাকবে। তখন তাকিয়ে থাকতে হবে শ্রীলঙ্কা-পাকিস্তান সিরিজের দিকে। সে ক্ষেত্রে পাকিস্তানকে হারতে হবে ৪-১ ব্যবধানে। তাহলে পাকিস্তানের রেটিং হবে ৮৫.৯ পয়েন্ট। কিন্তু পাকিস্তান যদি ৩-২ ব্যবধানে সিরিজ হারে তাহলে ৮৭.৮ রেটিং পয়েন্ট নিয়ে বাংলাদেশের আগে চলে যাবে।
এখন বাংলাদেশ যদি সবচেয়ে খারাপ পরিস্থিতিতে পড়ে তাহলে? বাংলাদেশ ৬ ম্যাচের মধ্যে যদি কোনোটিতেই জয় না পায়, তাহলে বাংলাদেশের রেটিং হবে ৮৪.১ পয়েন্ট। সে ক্ষেত্রেও বাংলাদেশের সামনে সুযোগ থাকবে চ্যাম্পিয়নস ট্রফিতে খেলার। তবে সেটা একেবারেই কঠিন। তখন পাকিস্তানকে ৫-০ ব্যবধানে সিরিজ হারতে হবে শ্রীলঙ্কার কাছে। তাহলে পাকিস্তানের রেটিং হবে ৮৩.৯ পয়েন্ট। অর্থাৎ বাংলাদেশ দুই সিরিজে কোনো ম্যাচ না জিততে পারলে এবং পাকিস্তান শ্রীলঙ্কার বিপক্ষে যেকোনো ম্যাচ জিতলেই বাংলাদেশের আগে চলে যাবে পাকিস্তান।
এত সমীকরণের জটিলতায় না পড়তে চাইলে বাংলাদেশকে ৬ ম্যাচের যেকোনো ২ টিতে জিতে ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজের ওপরে থেকেই চ্যাম্পিয়নস ট্রফি নিশ্চিত করতে হবে। সেটা ভারত সিরিজেই সম্ভব। ভারতকে ২-১ ব্যবধানে বা ৩-০ তে হোয়াইটওয়াশ করলেই বাংলাদেশ চ্যাম্পিয়নস ট্রফির টিকেট পেয়ে যাবে। তখন লড়াই হবে পাকিস্তান এবং ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজের মধ্যে অষ্টম দল হিসেবে কে যাবে।
এখানে আরেকটা কথা বলা জরুরি। ২০১৭ সালের ৩০ সেপ্টেম্বর পর্যন্ত র‍্যাঙ্কিংয়ে আট নম্বরের ভেতরে থাকতে পারলে আগামী বিশ্বকাপে সরাসরি খেলার সুযোগ পাবে বাংলাদেশ, খেলতে হবে না বাছাই পর্ব। এ কারণেই এবার র‍্যাঙ্কিং, রেটিং পয়েন্ট-এসব নিয়ে আলোচনা হচ্ছে বেশি।

নআপ বিশ্বের অন্যতম সেরা, তথ্যটা জানাই। কিন্তু লড়াই তো কেবল ব্যাটিং দিয়ে হয় না। টেস্ট ম্যাচ জিততে চাইলে ২০ উইকেট নেওয়ার জোর থাকতে হবে বোলিং লাইনআপে। আসন্ন টেস্ট সিরিজে বাংলাদেশের ২০ উইকেট নেওয়ার সামর্থ্য আছে ভারতীয় বোলারদের? প্রশ্নটা ভারতীয় সংবাদমাধ্যম ডিএনএ-এর।
পত্রিকাটির এক বিশ্লেষণীতে বলা হয়েছে, উপমহাদেশের উইকেট সাধারণত স্পিন-সহায়ক। ভারতের বোলিং শক্তিও স্পিন-নির্ভর। এবার ভারতীয় দলের স্পিন বিভাগের নেতৃত্বে থাকবেন রবিচন্দ্রন অশ্বিন। সঙ্গে থাকছেন পুরোনো সৈনিক হরভজন সিং। আইপিএলের পারফরম্যান্সের ভিত্তিতে হরভজনকে নেওয়া হলেও ভারতীয় নির্বাচক কমিটির ব্যাখ্যা ছিল, ‘বাংলাদেশ দলে ছয়জন বাঁ হাতি ব্যাটসম্যান রয়েছে। এ ছাড়া অধিনায়কের চাহিদাপত্রেও ছিলেন হরভজন।’ উপমহাদেশের ব্যাটসম্যানরা বরাবরই স্পিনে ভালো। কাজেই ‘ফ্ল্যাট উইকেটে’ এই দুজন স্পিনার দারুণ ছন্দে থাকা বাংলাদেশি ব্যাটসম্যানদের জন্য কতটা ভয়ংকর হয়ে উঠতে পারেন, তা এক প্রশ্ন।
ভারতীয় দলের পেস আক্রমণে রয়েছেন ইশান্ত শর্মা, উমেশ যাদব, ভুবনেশ্বর কুমার ও বরুণ অ্যারন। গত আট বছরে এখনো নিজেকে দলের অপরিহার্য করে তুলতে পেরেছেন ইশান্ত? উমেশ যদিও নিজের সম্ভাবনার কথা জানান দিয়েছেন, তবে বড্ড খেয়ালি ও অধারাবাহিক পারফরম্যান্স। ভুবনেশ্বর নিজেকে প্রমাণ করলেও উপমহাদেশের কন্ডিশনে কতটা কার্যকর, সেটিও এক প্রশ্ন। বরুণের বলে গতি থাকলেও মাঝেমধ্যে লাইন-লেংথে খেই হারিয়ে ফেলেন।
সবচেয়ে বড় কথা, সাম্প্রতিক সময়ে বিদেশের মাটিতে ভারতীয় বোলারদের পারফরম্যান্স বলার মতো নয়। সর্বশেষ, গত বছর জুলাইয়ে লর্ডস টেস্টে ইংল্যান্ডের ২০ উইকেট নিতে পেরেছিলেন ভারতীয় বোলাররা। সে ম্যাচটা জিতেও ছিল ভারত। দেশের মাটিতে সর্বশেষ প্রতিপক্ষের ২০ উইকেট নিয়েছিল ২০১৩ সালের নভেম্বরে, ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজের বিপক্ষে। ওই সফরে ক্যারিবিয়ানদের ত্রাস হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছিল ভারতীয় স্পিনাররা। শচীন টেন্ডুলকারের বিদায়ী সে সিরিজে ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজের ৩৮ উইকেটের ২৪টিই গিয়েছিল ভারতীয় স্পিনারদের পকেটে।
বাংলাদেশের বিপক্ষে ভারতীয় বোলাররা একই সাফল্য পাবে, ভাবা কঠিনই। সম্প্রতি পাকিস্তানি বোলারদের বিপক্ষে বাংলাদেশি ব্যাটসম্যানরা যেভাবে সাবলীলভাবে খেলেছে, সেটা ভারতীয় বোলারদের জন্য অশনিসংকেত। এটা মানতে হবে, ভারতের তুলনায় ঢের শক্তিশালী পাকিস্তানি বোলিং লাইনআপ। জুনায়েদ খান, ওয়াহাব রিয়াজের মতো বিশ্বমানের পেসারদের সঙ্গে ছিলেন ইয়াসির শাহ, জুলফিকার বাবর, মোহাম্মদ হাফিজের মতো শক্তিশালী স্পিন আক্রমণ। এমন বোলিং লাইনআপ নিয়েও ঢাকা টেস্ট বাদে গোটা সিরিজে বাংলাদেশের বিপক্ষে নাস্তানাবুদ হতে হয়েছে পাকিস্তান দলকে।
পাকিস্তানের বিপক্ষে তিন ওয়ানডেতে বাংলাদেশ রান তুলেছে ৮২০, বিপরীতে মাত্র ১১ উইকেট নিতে পেরেছিল পাকিস্তানি বোলাররা। তবে টেস্টে বেশ সফল ছিল মিসবাহর দল। চার ইনিংসে বাংলাদেশ রান তুলেছে ১৩১১, উইকেট হারিয়েছে ৩৪টি। এই ৩৪ উইকেটের ২০টি নিয়েছিলেন পাকিস্তানি স্পিনাররা। এ পরিসংখ্যান দেখে ভারতীয় দল আশাবাদী হতে পারে। কারণ, তাদের বোলিং শক্তিও স্পিন। তবে ভারতীয় স্পিনাররা সাফল্য পেলে নিশ্চয় হাত গুটিয়ে বসে থাকবেন না সাকিব আল হাসান-তাইজুল ইসলামরাও।
সব মিলিয়ে জমজমাট এক সিরিজের বার্তা ছড়িয়েই ১০ জুন শুরু হবে ফতুল্লা টেস্ট।

‘বাংলাদেশ সফর কোহলির জন্য বড় চ্যালেঞ্জ’

ধূসর রঙের প্যান্ট। গাঢ় কালো পোলো শার্ট। চোখে কালো চশমা। মুখে একরাশ গাম্ভীর্য। চোখের অভিব্যক্তি রোদচশমার আড়ালেই থাকল। আর মুখের অভিব্যক্তি তো বুঝতেই দিলেন না। অথচ ভারতীয় ক্রিকেটে ‘বিরাট কোহলি যুগ’ আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে শুরু হচ্ছে এই সফরেই। হোটেল সোনারগাঁওয়ে বাস থেকে নামার মুখে কোহলিকে মনে হলো না, এ নিয়ে বাড়তি কোনো আবেগে ভুগছেন।
অবশ্য কোহলি অধিনায়ক-সুলভ গাম্ভীর্যের খোলসে থাকলেও বাকিদের কেউ কেউ খোশমেজাজেই ছিলেন। শিখর ধাওয়ানই আলাদা করে নজর কাড়লেন। বরাবরই মৌজে থাকাটাই ধাওয়ানের জীবনের সরল দর্শন—বোঝা গেল আরেকবার। হরভজন সিংও বেশ গম্ভীর। অনেক দিন পর টেস্ট দলে সুযোগ পেয়েছেন। ‘নিজেকে প্রমাণ করতেই হবে’—এই মন্ত্র যেন অষ্টপ্রহর জপে চলেছেন ভাজ্জি। প্রায় সাড়ে পাঁচ বছর পর টেস্ট খেলতে বাংলাদেশে পা রাখল ভারত। সেটিও মাত্র এক টেস্টের জন্য।
টেস্ট একটাই, তবে সেটি কোহলির জন্য আক্ষরিক অর্থেই ‘টেস্ট’ বা পরীক্ষা হয়ে উঠতে পারে। এমনটাই ধারণা ভারতের সাবেক ক্রিকেটার মোহাম্মদ কাইফের। কাইফ বলেছেন, ‘এটা কোহলির জন্য বিরাট একটা চ্যালেঞ্জ হতে যাচ্ছে। অধিনায়ক হিসেবে নতুন। আর বাংলাদেশকেও আমরা পাকিস্তানের বিপক্ষে সাম্প্রতিক সিরিজে বেশ ভালো খেলতে দেখেছি।’
তবে হরভজন মনে করেন, সেই পরীক্ষায় লেটার নম্বরসহই পাস করবেন কোহলি। আজহারউদ্দিনের অধিনায়কত্বে অভিষেক; এর পর সৌরভ গাঙ্গুলির অধিনায়কত্বে নিজেকে মেলে ধরা। খেলেছেন রাহুল দ্রাবিড় আর ধোনির অধিনায়কত্বে। এবার ভারতের ক্রিকেটের নতুন যুগের নতুন সেনাপতির অধীনে খেলবেন এই অফ স্পিনার। কোহলির নেতৃত্বে এরই মধ্যে মুগ্ধ মনে হচ্ছে ভাজ্জিকে, ‘ও জাত-লড়াকু, ম্যাচ উইনার। প্রতিপক্ষ যে-ই হোক না কেন, জয়ই ওর​ শেষ কথা। ওর মতো অধিনায়ক পাওয়া খুবই ইতিবাচক একটা দিক। জয়ের জন্যই আমরা ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ব। এই মানসিকতাই দলে নিয়ে আসবে বিরাট কোহলি।’
কোহলির অধিনায়কত্বে কখনো খেলা হয়নি। তবে আইপিএলে প্রতিপক্ষ হিসেবে দেখেছেন। দেখেছেন ঘরোয়া ক্রিকেটে। মাঠের বাইরে থেকেও। অনেকেই যে কোহলির আবেগের বাড়াবাড়ি প্রকাশ বা আক্রমণাত্মক মেজাজ নিয়ে সমালোচনা করছেন, বদলাতে বলছেন—এ ব্যাপারেও একমত নন হরভজন, ‘ও এমন একজন খেলোয়াড় দলের জন্য যে নিজেকে উজাড় করে দেয়। সে সব সময় চ্যালেঞ্জ নিতে ভালোবাসে, জিততে ভালোবাসে। তাঁর মতো প্রাণশক্তিতে ভরপুর অধিনায়ক মাঠে থাকলে সেটি বাকিদেরও উদ্দীপিত করে। এটা খুবই ইতিবাচক দিক।’
সর্বশেষ ১৩ টেস্টে মাত্র একটিতে জয়—এমন রেকর্ড নিয়েই বাংলাদেশে পা রাখল ভারত। অবশ্য বাংলাদেশের বিপক্ষে টেস্টে তাদের রেকর্ডটা স্বাভাবিকভাবেই ভালো। সাত টেস্টের জয়টিতেই জিতেছে। কিন্তু নতুন অধিনায়কের নেতৃত্বে নতুন কোহলি ‘নতুন বাংলাদেশে’রও মুখোমুখি হবেন। যে বাংলাদেশ এখন শেষ বিন্দু পর্যন্ত লড়াই করে, তা সে প্রতিপক্ষ যে-ই হোক না কেন!

Harbhajan Singh Hails Virat Kohli's Aggression, Intent to Win

a: Excited to be back into the Indian team, off-spinner Harbhajan Singh on Sunday heaped lavish praise on Test skipper Virat Kohli for his aggression and intention to win.
"Virat is a match-winner, someone who is very competitive. No matter what the situation is, he always wants to win which is a great quality as a player. Having him as a captain, certainly helps the team a lot as he is always looking for the win," Harbhajan told media persons on the eve of the team's departure to Bangladesh where they will play one Test match and three One-Day Internationals (ODIs). "I have played lot with him, he is very positive and he is someone who is always there for the team. He wants to take up challenges and wants to finish up the game, which is very important form the team's point of view."
Harbhajan said the Indian team will benefit from having such a positive-minded skipper.
"Having a captain who has so much of energy, is a very positive sign. The way Indian team played in Australia was brilliant. Though we didn't win the Test match that intent was there and that's what Virat Kohli brings to the table. Whatever he does on the field, he does it to win the game," said the "Turbanator".
Making a comeback to the team after more than two years, Harbhajan said he will continue playing his role of helping India win matches.
"My role would be the same what it was five years back - to win games for India and help other bowlers in the team. We need to work as a unit and it is not about me there are other bowlers and we all would look to back each other," he said.
"That is what I have been doing while I was playing with Anil Kumble, Amit Mishra and other bowlers. The goal is the same- to win for India," said the man with 413 Test wickets.
"I am very excited and hopefully I can contribute to the team's success."
Harbhajan said he was also looking forward to hunt in pair with fellow offie Ravichandran Ashwin.
"Bowling with Ashwin will be good, his motive as well as mine are to win the game for India. We are going there as a team and we need to push everyone together towards the direction of victory," added Harbhajan.

"We have toured England, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand and we have learnt a lot from those tours. Those tours were very handy for the team in terms of gaining experience and learning how we can dominate tests. Which is why we will not take this one Test match lightly and we will perform well," says Ajinkya Rahane
This time around Virat will also have a tried and tested performer in Harbhajan Singh, who will be eager to show that he still has what it takes to perform at the international stage at the age of 34 and lead India's spin attack.
Harbhajan still has the fire in is belly. When asked if he was looking ahead to forging a partnership with R Ashwin, the Punjab spinner quipped, "Whenever I have played with Anil bhai, Zaheer Khan or others, our motive was to win games for India� and that doesn't change. If I'm playing now with R Ashwin or Karn Sharma, the basic motive does not change. I would still go out to win games for India." �
The change in captaincy has had a definite impact on the Indian dressing room. It is young , energetic and willing to go the distance. Virat Kohli promises them the freedom to express themselves but what also asks for a shift in gear,"Small changes are being made in the attitude of players and in fitness levels too. Everyone should feel as though they have the same authority in the team and everyone should want to make major contributions to the team, not just small contributions, and these small changes that are being made."
That Virat Kohli doesn't mind going all out to produce favourable results for the team is no secret. The same routine is expected against Bangladesh, with winning being priority number 1. Bangladesh’s top ten moments against India-4

There’s every chance that the upcoming series against India might just be the most successful tour that the Tigers have ever had against their South Asian neighbours.

After all, the cogwheels are churning and the Tigers have been on a roll ever since their World Cup campaign in Australia and New Zealand.

However, no matter how successful the result, the Bangladesh-India cricket anthology will never be complete without a mention of the historic five-wicket win at the Port of Spain in 2007.

The effect of that result was so enormous that that match has been referred to almost every single time India took on Bangladesh in a World Cup ever since, regardless of Bangladesh’s form; as though the ghosts of Port of Spain have been lingering ever since.

To many ex-cricketers that was the win that started it all for the Tigers in major events.

It was an emotion that was quite obvious from Habibul Bashar, the captain back then.

“The World Cups in 1999 and 2007 are both special for me. Defeating Pakistan as a new unit… that was definitely unbelievable. But personally for me, the win against India is something that I hold very high in my heart.

We knew we could beat them, but when we did… the feeling was incredible,” Bashar said while reflecting on the win.
Slow left-armer Mohammad Rafique, who scalped figures of 3 for 38 in that game remembers every detail as though it had taken place yesterday.

“I think I got [MS] Dhoni, [Rahul] Dravid and [Sourav] Ganguly,”smirked Rafique.

“That wasn’t the first time we beat India. We beat them in 2004 as well. But that win was very special because back then India was supposed to qualify for the second round… it was almost written. But we stopped that.

“We have progressed a lot in World Cups. We won three games in 2011 and then three more in 2015. But to me that win was how it all started for us. Once we got through that hurdle, we didn’t know what our limits were,” he added.

Like in almost every other victory against India, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza played an enigmatic role in 2007 as well, taking four wickets and ensuring that India were under pressure right from the start.

What was as breathtaking to watch though was the birth of Bangladesh’s youngsters, who would eventually go on to form the core of Bangladesh’s team in the coming years.

Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan, only teenagers back then, surprised the world when they dispatched a legendary Indian team with five wickets and nine balls remaining.

A couple more weeks and they will be up against the same opponents, this time though with a lot more expectations.

Kieswetter forced to retire

England and Somerset wicketkeeper/batsman Craig Kieswetter has been forced to retire due to an eye injury, he announced Friday.

The 27-year-old player was left with vision problems after breaking his nose and damaging his cheekbone while batting in a County Championship match against Northamptonshire in July last year.

"Having gone through that experience of my eye injury and everything it entailed, I feel mentally I will never again be the player that I was," Kieswetter said in a statement.

"I have had a terrific career, with plenty of ups and occasional downs, and I am calling time on my career and walking away with no regrets."

Kieswetter played in 46 ODIs and 25 Twenty20 internationals for England, but never got Test cap.

In first-class cricket and list A cricket, he averaged just under 40 with the bat, while his average in Twenty20 was just under 32. Behind the stumps he claimed 308 catches and 11 stumpings.

“I'll have so many memories of a career that spanned nine years of my life during which I have made so many friends," Kieswetter added. "See you all on the sidelines."

As the India series in 2004 progressed, Bangladesh's chances of doing something special gradually improved.

Mohammad Ashraful's breathtaking 158 in the second Test had laid the platform.

That was followed by a near-miss in the first ODI when Bangladesh went down to India by just 11 runs; a close result, considering the previous face-offs between the two sides.

As the Tigers travelled from Chittagong to Dhaka to play the second ODI, there was a sense of confidence growing in the team.

They knew that they had managed to stir a few nerves in their opponents in the last few weeks as for brief periods of the tour they dominated the visitors.

They could sense that they were close to achieving something special: their first win against India; their first win against a top-ranked side since their triumph against Pakistan back in 1999.

The second ODI at the Bangabandhu National Stadium though didn't start in the best of ways.

Bangladesh's experiment to promote Mohammad Rafique at the top failed and the Tigers were down and out at 88 for 5 in 22 overs.

That's when Aftab Ahmed came into the fray. The diminutive batsman knew that he had nothing to lose, unleashed his strokes and took the attack to India.

Along with a resolute Khaled Mashud at the other end, the hosts began their recovery.

Following Mashud's departure in the 30th over, Aftab, who ended up scoring 67, and Khaled Mahmud fell in quick succession and Bangladesh, despite the comeback, were in danger of getting bowled below 200.

Mashrafe Bin Mortaza entered the scene at that point of time and changed the game.

He smacked a six and three fours to light up the arena with his 39-ball 31. His blitz took the hosts to 229, which still seemed to be a below-par total.

If all the wielding with the bat wasn't enough, Mashrafe came back with the ball in his hands and removed Virender Sehwag off the very first ball after the exchange.

Feeding on the momentum that Mashrafe inserted into the game, Tapash Baisya, Khaled Mahmud and Mohammad Rafique put in stellar bowling performances, taking two wickets each.

In fact, that was one of those evenings when the Tigers performed brilliantly as a team.

Aftab and Rajin Saleh effected two run-outs while the rest was handled by the bowlers.

It was an enormous win and a much needed one, considering the immense criticism that the Tigers faced prior to that series.

Injury spoils Riyad's dream

Having been in the international arena for eight years, Mahmudullah Riyad must have gone through a number of injuries in the past. However, the fracture that he sustained on his left index finger during catching practice on Thursday in Mirpur probably hurt like never before.

With an astounding performance in the World Cup and a century in the final round of the recently concluded Bangladesh Cricket League, the 29-year-old was arguably enjoying the best phase of his cricketing career. And it's not the best feeling when you are compelled to take a break, due to a mere mishap, during such a phase.

Speaking to The Daily Star yesterday, an understandably disappointed Riyad lamented not being able take part in the India series.

"I feel really, really bad. Honestly… I can't explain my disappointment in words," said Riyad.

"I had plenty of dreams regarding this series. I was preparing myself accordingly. I didn't even imagine that such a thing could have happened. I was obviously disappointed immediately after the injury. I was however hoping to be able to play the ODIs at least. But that too was not to be," he added.

While Riyad has been deemed out of the India series, the good news is that he is most likely to return in time for the series against South Africa which begins on July 5.

"The doctor said that this was an incomplete fracture and that it had not affected my joint. So it is expected to heal faster than usual. I will start cycling in two to three days and then begin my rehabilitation.

"At the moment I am looking forward to the South Africa series. I am confident that I can recover in time for those matches," Riyad said.

Following his elevation to number four, Riyad has averaged a brilliant 119.25 for Bangladesh in ODIs with two centuries and three 50-plus scores. While he did have a disappointing series against Pakistan, he fought back with a century at Mirpur in the BCL.

"He will definitely be missed. He has been in good form and he would have been handy for the India series. But there's not much we can do now. I am sure his replacement will do well. The kind of confidence that the team has right now, any player who replaces Riyad will give his best," said chief selector Faruque Ahmed.

'All my focus is on June 10'

Opener Tamim Iqbal admitted that he was 'slightly worried' upon learning of his latest medical development. On Thursday it was revealed that the left-hander's latest MRI report suggested that there could be a cyst in his knee. The BCB's sports physician however, stated that the condition wouldn't affect Tamim's sporting activities and that it wasn't serious.

The left-hander told The Daily Star yesterday that while he was anxious regarding the development, he won't let it interfere with his batting in the India series which begins on June 10.

"I had an MRI when I was in Malaysia recently and sent the reports to Doctor David Young in Australia. He informed me regarding a new finding in my knee. He called it Ossifying Fibroma. He said that it won't affect my game but asked me to remove the cyst whenever there is a gap in the schedule. He also said that there might be some pain in my knee but that I would have to bear that pain and play.

"So right now, I am completely focused on June 10. I am working on my rehab schedule. My leg is doing well… I feel good. I can't say what will happen in the match, but at this moment there is no problem," Tamim said.

"It's only natural for me to be a little worried. I am a little anxious. But I am sure that when the India series begins, I won't be thinking of this issue," he added.

When asked if he had mentally planned a date to undergo an operation and remove the suspected cyst, Tamim said, "We get very few opportunities to play Test cricket. I want to play this entire season. I can't miss these chances. I can only take a decision after this year is over. But yes, if I feel uncomfortable on the field, then there's nothing that I can do. I'll have to take the required measures then."

Tamim had surgery on his left knee in December last year and then he suffered an injury to his right knee in the Bangladesh Cricket League's one day tournament before the home series against Pakistan. That was the reason that the southpaw was asked to skip the final round of the BCL's four-day competition.

The left-hander was Bangladesh's star player in the last series against Pakistan. He scored two consecutive centuries in the ODI series and became only the second Bangladeshi to score a double hundred during the Test series.

‘মাশরাফি রিকশায় কেন?’

অনেক বড় ঘটনাই ঘটতে পারত। দেশের মানুষের আশীর্বাদেই কিনা, অল্পের জন্য বেঁচে গেছেন মাশরাফি বিন মুর্তজা। মিরপুরের শেরেবাংলা স্টেডিয়ামের কাছেই বাসা হওয়ায় বৃহস্পতিবার রিকশা করেই অনুশীলনে আসছিলেন বাংলাদেশের ওয়ানডে অধিনায়ক। পথে একটি বেপরোয়া বাস পেছন থেকে ধাক্কা দেয় মাশরাফিকে। সতর্ক হয়ে রিকশায় বসার কারণে নিজেকে কিছুটা হলেও সামলাতে পেরেছিলেন। কিন্তু আঘাত তিনি পেয়েছেনই। মাশরাফির এই দুর্ঘটনাটা যেন খেলোয়াড়দের জন্য এক ধরনের সতর্কবার্তাই। জাতীয় ক্রিকেট দলের সাবেক অধিনায়ক ও বাংলাদেশের প্রথম টেস্ট সেঞ্চুরিয়ান আমিনুল ইসলামের চোখে অন্তত তা-ই। তিনি মাশরাফির রিকশা ভ্রমণের ব্যাপারেও নিজের বিরক্তি ও বিস্ময় চেপে রাখতে পারেননি।

প্রথম আলোর সঙ্গে এক আলাপচারিতায় তিনি বলেন, ‘ভারতের মতো একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সিরিজের আগে খেলোয়াড়দের একটু সতর্ক থাকাটাই বাঞ্ছনীয়। দুর্ঘটনার ওপর আমাদের কারও কোনো হাত না থাকলেও সেদিন মাশরাফির রিকশায় করে অনুশীলনে আসাটা আমি মেনে নিতে পারছি না। সে হয়তো সরল মনেই রিকশায় চেপেছিল। বাসা কাছে বলেই গাড়ি ব্যবহার করতে চায়নি সে। কিন্তু দুর্ঘটনা তো একটা ঘটেই গেল। গাড়িতে সে অন্তত চোটটা এড়াতে পারত। মাশরাফির মনে রাখা উচিত, সে আমাদের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সম্পদ।’

মাশরাফির এই ঘটনা আমিনুলকে ফিরিয়ে নিয়ে গেছে ১৮ বছর আগের এক সকালে। ১৯৯৭ সালে আইসিসি ট্রফিতে খেলতে যাওয়ার আগে ক্যাম্প হচ্ছিল সাভারের বিকেএসপিতে। সে সময় বিকেএসপিতে সুযোগসুবিধার ঘাটতি থাকার কারণে অনেক সিনিয়র খেলোয়াড়ই সেখানে থাকতে চাইতেন না। ব্যক্তিগত গাড়ি নিয়ে সেখানে যাওয়াটা ছিল খুব স্বাভাবিক ঘটনা। ক্রিকেটে পেশাদারির ছোঁয়াও তখন ঠিক সেভাবে ছিল না। আইসিসি ট্রফির মাস খানেক আগে বিকেএসপিতে একটা দুর্ঘটনা ঘটেছিল। সেই দুর্ঘটনায় আহত হয়েছিলেন আমিনুলসহ আরও দু-একজন ক্রিকেটার।
স্মৃতি হাতড়ে আমিনুল বললেন, ‘মণি ভাইয়ের (এনামুল হক) গাড়ি সেদিন আমাকে আঘাত করেছিল। অটো গিয়ারের গাড়িতে তিনি কোনো একটা গড়বড় করে ফেলেছিলেন। আমি কোমরে প্রচণ্ড ব্যথা পেয়েছিলাম। একটা পর্যায়ে মনে হচ্ছিল আমি বুঝি আর আইসিসি ট্রফিটা খেলতে পারব না। অথচ সতর্ক হলে খুব সহজেই এড়ানো যেত ওই দুর্ঘটনাটি। নিজের গাড়ি চালিয়ে সাভারে অনুশীলনে যাওয়া আর ওখান থেকে ফেরার ব্যাপারটি ছিল বেশ ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ।’

আইসিসির সভাপতি জহির আব্বাস!

জহির আব্বাসকে আইসিসি সভাপতি পদে মনোনয়ন দিল পাকিস্তান ক্রিকেট বোর্ড (পিসিবি)। আইসিসির সভাপতি পদের প্রার্থিতা থেকে নাজাম শেঠি সরে দাঁড়ানোর ঘোষণা দেওয়ার এক দিন পর পরশু পিসিবি বেছে নিল পাকিস্তানের এই কিংবদন্তি ব্যাটসম্যানকে।
২০১৬ সাল থেকে সভাপতি পদের জন্য সাবেক ক্রিকেটারদের মনোনয়ন দেওয়ার প্রস্তাব উঠেছিল আইসিসির সর্বশেষ সভায়। নাজাম শেঠি ও পিসিবির সিদ্ধান্তের ফল, এ মাসের শেষে বারবাডোজে আইসিসির সভায় অনুমোদিত হলেই আগামী ১ জুলাই থেকেই আনুষ্ঠানিকতার সভাপতি পদে বসছেন সাবেক কোনো ক্রিকেটার।
‘এশিয়ান ব্র্যাডম্যান’ হিসেবে পরিচিত পাকিস্তানের সাবেক অধিনায়ক জহির আব্বাস সর্বশেষ নাজাম শেঠির উপদেষ্টা হিসেবেই কাজ করেছেন পিসিবিতে। সভাপতি মনোনয়নে পিসিবির আলোচনায় ছিলেন আরও দুই সাবেক অধিনায়ক মাজিদ খান ও আসিফ ইকবালও। ৬৭ বছর বয়সী আব্বাস টেস্টে ১২টি ও ওয়ানডেতে ৭টি সেঞ্চুরি করেছেন। প্রথম শ্রেণির ক্রিকেটে সেঞ্চুরির সেঞ্চুরি করা একমাত্র এশীয় ব্যাটসম্যানও জহির আব্বাস।
বাংলাদেশের আ হ ম মুস্তাফা কামালের পদত্যাগের পর থেকেই আইসিসি সভাপতির পদটা শূন্য রয়েছে। 

শোয়েবের চোখে বাংলাদেশের বদলে যাওয়ার রহস্য

‘বাংলাদেশ আর বাচ্চা নেই’! স্টার স্পোর্টসের বিজ্ঞাপনটা এরই মধ্যে নজর কেড়েছে সবার। আসন্ন বাংলাদেশ-ভারত সিরিজ নিয়ে অনুষ্ঠানও শুরু করেছে স্টার স্পোর্টস। চ্যানেলটির ‘গেম প্লান’ অনুষ্ঠানে আজ বাংলাদেশকে প্রশংসায় ভাসালেন শোয়েব আক্তার। কদিন আগে ওয়ানডে, টি-টোয়েন্টিতে পাকিস্তানকে উড়িয়ে দিয়েছে বাংলাদেশ। সাবেক পাকিস্তানি ফাস্ট বোলার সেই অনুষ্ঠানে ব্যাখ্যা করলেন, তাঁর দৃষ্টিতে কীভাবে বদলে গেছে বাংলাদেশ।

প্রথমেই বাংলাদেশের শক্তির দিকগুলো জানতে চাওয়া হয়েছিল শোয়েবের কাছে। ‘রাউলপিন্ডি এক্সপ্রেস’ বললেন, ‘তারা দাপটের সঙ্গেই আমাদের হারিয়েছে। তাদের ব্যাটিং শক্তি অনেক উন্নতি হয়েছে।’ এর পরই সবিস্তারে ব্যাখ্যা দিলেন বাংলাদেশের শক্তি নিয়ে, ‘তাদের ব্যাটিং শক্তির মূল দিক হচ্ছে ওপেনার। তামিম ইকবাল-সৌম্য সরকার-মাহমুদউল্লাহ ব্যাট হাতে ছন্দে আছে। সবাই রান পেয়েছে এবং পাকিস্তানকে চাপে রেখেছে। তাদের ব্যাটিং এখন অনেক পরিণত। বিশেষ করে তামিম ইকবাল খুবই বিধ্বংসী ব্যাটসম্যান।’
বাংলাদেশকে দুর্দান্ত দল হিসেবে অভিহিত করে ভারতকেও সতর্ক থাকতে বললেন শোয়েব, ‘তাদের ব্যাটিং লাইনআপে নজর রাখতে হবে ভারতকে। ওয়ানডেতে তারা দারুণ দল। তবে যে মানের খেলোয়াড় রয়েছে, টেস্টে নিজেদের সক্ষমতা এখনো প্রমাণ করতে পারেনি বাংলাদেশ।’

পাকিস্তানের বিপক্ষে দুটো ওয়ানডে সেঞ্চুরি ও টেস্টে ডাবল সেঞ্চুরি করা তামিম দারুণ ফর্মে রয়েছেন। ভারতের বিপক্ষে ওয়ানডেতে মাঝে মধ্যেই তাঁর ব্যাট হাসলেও কোনো সেঞ্চুরি নেই তামিমের। ১৪ ম্যাচে করেছেন ৪২৬ রান, ফিফটি ৫টি। ওয়ানডে ক্যারিয়ারেও তামিমের ২৯ ফিফটির বিপরীতে সেঞ্চুরি ছয়টি। একজন ওপেনারের ফিফটিগুলোকে বড় ইনিংসে টেনে নিয়ে যাওয়া উচিত বলে মনে করেন শোয়েব, ‘ফিফটিগুলো সেঞ্চুরিতে পরিণত করতে হবে তামিমকে। সে যদি ফিফটিকে সেঞ্চুরিতে পরিণত করতে পারে, তবে সেরা খেলোয়াড়ে পরিণত হবে। আর ফিফটি সেঞ্চুরিতে পৌঁছালে দলও পাবে বড় সংগ্রহ।’
শোয়েবকে উপস্থাপক ধরিয়ে দিলেন, সৌম্য-মাহমুদউল্লাহর মতো ছন্দে আছেন মুশফিকুর রহিমও। সবাই রান পাচ্ছেন, বড় জুটি গড়ছেন। এমনকি সাকিব আল হাসানের কথা ভুললেও চলবে না। বাংলাদেশ দলের সমন্বয়টা এখন দারুণ। বিশ্বকাপে ওপরের দিকে নেমে রান পেয়েছেন সৌম্য। একটু নিচে খেললেও রান পেয়েছেন মুশফিকও। পরপর দুই সেঞ্চুরি করেছেন মাহমুদউল্লাহ। উল্লিখিত সবাইকে ভারতের জন্য বিপজ্জনক। ধারণা করা হচ্ছে, বড় স্কোরের ম্যাচ হবে। ওয়ানডে সিরিজটা হবে দুই দলের ব্যাটিং বনাম ব্যাটিংয়ের লড়াই। বাংলাদেশ দলে যেমন দারুণ কিছু ব্যাটসম্যান আছে তেমনি ভারত দলের ব্যাটিং লাইনআপও বিশ্বের অন্যতম সেরা।

এরপর শোয়েব ভূয়সী প্রশংসা করলেন পেসার রুবেল হোসেনের। বললেন, ‘রুবেল হোসেন অসাধারণ বোলার। ফাস্ট বোলারের আগ্রাসী মনোভাব তার আছে। প্রতিটি বলেই নিজের সর্বোচ্চ চেষ্টা করে। এখন সে উইকেট নিতেও জানে। ঠিক জায়গায় বল ফেলে, নিয়মিত উইকেট পায়। সে পরিণত ফাস্ট বোলার।’
পুরোনো বলে রুবেলের সুইংয়ের বিষয়টি বিশেষ গুরুত্ব দিয়ে সাবেক পাকিস্তানি ফাস্ট বোলার বললেন, ‘পুরোনো বলে সুইং করতে জানে রুবেল। উইকেট নেওয়ার সামর্থ্যই তাকে ভালো ফাস্ট বোলারে পরিণত করেছে।’ প্রাসঙ্গিকভাবে এলো বিশ্বকাপে কোহলিকে ফিরিয়ে রুবেলের সেই আগ্রাসী ও উপভোগ্য উদ্‌যাপনও।
ভারতের বিপক্ষে বাংলাদেশের আরেক সফল বোলার তরুণ তুর্কি তাসকিন আহমেদ। ৩ ম্যাচে নিয়েছেন ১০ উইকেট। ভারতের জন্য ভয়ংকর হতে পারে এমনটা জানিয়ে তাসকিনকে নিয়ে শোয়েবের মূল্যায়ন, ‘তার বলে গতি আছে। ঠিক জায়গায় বল ফেলতে পারে। একই সঙ্গে বলব, অ্যাকশন নিয়ে খুব একটা উদ্বিগ্ন হওয়া দরকার নেই। খুব নির্ভার চিত্তে দৌড়াতে হবে। কী করতে হবে (পিচে), সেটি নিয়েই ভাবা জরুরি। অনেকে সাইড আর্মের অ্যাকশন নিয়ে কাজ করতে একাডেমিতে যায়। অ্যাকশন যা-ই হোক, ঠিক জায়গায় কীভাবে বল করতে হবে, সেটিই মূল ব্যাপার। তাসকিন এখনো শিখছে। হিথ স্ট্রিক তাকে সাহায্য করছেন।’

বাংলাদেশের উইকেট নিজেকে মেলে ধরা গতিময় পেসারদের জন্য একটু কঠিনই। এ কারণে বাংলাদেশের উইকেটের সমালোচনা করে শোয়েব বললেন, ‘ব্যাটসম্যানের জন্য বিভ্রান্তিকর বাউন্স দিতে পারে তাসকিন। কিন্তু বাংলাদেশের উইকেট খুবই মন্থর। প্রতিযোগিতামূলক ওয়ানডের জন্য দ্রুত গতির উইকেট বানাতে হবে। ভালো উইকেট হলো ম্যাচও হবে জমজমাট।’

আগ্রাসী ধরন বদলাবেন না কোহলি

সফল অধিনায়ক হতে গেলে আচরণ সংযত করতে হবে। নতুন টেস্ট অধিনায়ক বিরাট কোহলির প্রতি এই পরামর্শই ছিল বিষেণ সিং বেদির। বললেন স্টিভ ওয়াহও। শান্ত-সুস্থির ছিলেন বলে মহেন্দ্র সিং ধোনিকে বলা হয় ‘ক্যাপটেন কুল’। কিন্তু কোহলি যেন ঠিক উল্টোটা। আবেগের বেগ একটু বেশিই। দলনেতা হিসেবে কোহলির ধরন বদলানো উচিত—এমনটাই যখন বলছে অনেকে, কোহলি সাফ জানিয়ে দিয়েছেন, তিনি একদমই বদলাবেন না।

বাংলাদেশ সফরে আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে অধিনায়কের দায়িত্ব পেতে চলা কোহলি বলেছেন, ‘কারও জন্য কিংবা কেউ চেয়ে বলেই আমি কখনো নিজেকে বদলাব না। এ ছোটখাটো ব্যাপারগুলোতে হয়তো আমার উন্নতি করা উচিত, কিন্তু অধিনায়ক হিসেবে আমার আগ্রাসী মনোভাবই বজায় থাকবে।’

ধোনির সঙ্গে কেন তুলনা হচ্ছে, সেটাও বুঝছেন না কোহলি, ‘কেন তুলনা হচ্ছে? আমি একেবারেই অন্য ধরনের। আমার ব্যক্তিত্ব আলাদা। তবে হ্যাঁ, বিশ্বজুড়েই অধিনায়কত্বে কিছু ব্যাপারে কিছু জিনিস মানা হয়। খুব বেশি আবেগপ্রবণ না হওয়া। একটু মোটা চামড়ার হওয়া। খেলায় যা হচ্ছে সেটা হজম করে ​ফেলা।’ এই জায়গায় নিজের উন্নতি করতে হবে, সেটা মানছেন, ‘ভালো অধিনায়কের অন্যতম গুণ হলো আপনার ভেতরের আবেগ যেন প্রকাশ না পেয়ে যায়। এটা খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, এখানে আমি উন্নতি করতে চাই। আপনি কী ভাবছেন, সেটা প্রতিপক্ষ টের পেয়ে গেলে ওরা বাড়তি সুবিধা পেয়ে যায়। এটা আমি বুঝি।’

কোহলির মতো টেস্ট ক্রিকেটে এখন অনেক তরুণ অধিনায়ক। কোহলি মতো যাঁরা আক্রমণাত্মক। এতে টেস্ট ক্রিকেট তার আসল মেজাজ কি হারিয়ে ফেলবে? কোহলির বক্তব্য একটু অন্য রকম, ‘যতক্ষণ দলগুলো প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতা গড়ে তুলছে, ম্যাচ জেতার জন্য খেলছে, ততক্ষণ টেস্ট ক্রিকেট সুরক্ষিতই থাকবে। আপনি চাইলে এটা রোমাঞ্চকর বানাতে পারেন, আবার একঘেয়েও বানাতে পারেন। চার ঘণ্টায় ৮০ রান তুলে লাভ কী?’

তাঁর দল টেস্টে সব সময় জয়ের জন্যই খেলবে। এতে যদি ঝুঁকি নিতে হয়, তাও নেবেন, ‘আমি জয়ের জন্য ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়াতেই বিশ্বাসী, এতে যদি শেষ দিকে ড্র করার জন্য যুঝতে হয়, তাও সই। কিন্তু জয়ের জন্য চেষ্টাটা তো অন্তত করা হবে। তাহলেই খেলাটা রোমাঞ্চকর হবে। অস্ট্রেলিয়ায় আমাদের চারটা ম্যাচেই দর্শকেরা দুর্দান্ত ছিল, কারণ তারা বুঝতে পেরেছিল, দীর্ঘ সময় ধরে আমরা বিনোদন দেয় এমন ধাঁচের ক্রিকেটই খেলতে চাই।’

ভারত সিরিজ শেষ মাহমুদউল্লাহর!

অনুশীলনের সময় বাঁ হাতের তর্জনীতে আঘাত পেয়েছেন মাহমুদউল্লাহ। আঙুলের হাড়ে ‘ফ্র্যাকচার’ ধরা পড়ায় আপাতত তাঁকে বেশ কিছু দিনের বিশ্রামেই যেতে হচ্ছে বলে জানা গেছে। বিশ্বকাপে দলের সেরা ব্যাটসম্যানটিকে ভারত সিরিজে পাচ্ছে না বাংলাদেশ।

বাংলাদেশের ক্রিকেটের জন্য আজকের দিনটা শুরুই হয়েছিল দুঃসংবাদ দিয়ে। মিরপুর শেরে বাংলা স্টেডিয়ামের পাশেই বাসা বলে গাড়ির বদলে রিকশায় করে অনুশীলনে আসছিলেন মাশরাফি বিন মুর্তজা। এ সময় বাসের​ ধাক্কায় আহত হন ওয়ানডে অধিনায়ক। তাঁর চোটের খবর​ শোনার পরই অনুশীলন শুরু করে আহত হন মাহমুদউল্লাহ। ক্যাচ ধর​তে গিয়ে বেকায়দায় বল লাগে তাঁর হাতে। 

দ্রুত এক্স-রে করা হলে বাঁ হাতের তর্জনীতে চিড় ধরা পড়ে। আরও পরীক্ষার জন্য তাঁকে রাজধানীর একটি হাসপাতালে নেওয়া হয়। পরীক্ষার পর চিকিৎ​সকেরা জানিয়েছেন, পুরো সেরে উঠতে তিন থেকে চার সপ্তাহ বিশ্রামে থাকতে হবে মাহমুদউল্লাহকে। বাংলাদেশ দলের ফিজিও বায়েজেদুলও ইসলাম নিশ্চিত করেছেন এই খবর।

সড়ক দুর্ঘটনার শিকার মাশরাফিবিশ্বকাপের পর পাকিস্তান সিরিজে সেই ফর্মটা দেখাতে না পারলেও বিসিএলে দুর্দান্ত এক ইনিংস খেলে আবার রানে ফেরার ইঙ্গিত দিয়েছিলেন মাহমুদউল্লাহ। ভারতের বিপক্ষে টেস্ট দলে আছেন। ওয়ানডে দলেও থাকার কথা ছিল। কিন্তু টেস্ট-ওয়ানডে দুই সিরিজেই দর্শক হয়ে থাকতে হচ্ছে । ২৪ জুন ভারতের বিপক্ষে বাংলাদেশের শেষ ওয়ানডে। এর আগে মাহমুদউল্লাহর সেরে ওঠার​ সম্ভাবনা কম।

ভারত সিরিজের পর পরই দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকা আসছে বাংলাদেশে। সেই সিরিজে দুটি টি-টোয়েন্টি, তিনটি ওয়ানডে ও দুটি টেস্ট খেলবে প্রোটিয়ারা। সব কিছু ঠিক থাকলে ৫ জুলাই প্রথম টি-টোয়েন্টিতে আবার দলে ফিরবেন এই অলরাউন্ডার।

ভারতের বিপক্ষে একমাত্র টেস্টের জন্য গতকালই স্কোয়াড ঘোষণা করেছে বিসিবি। মাহমুদউল্লাহ ছিটকে যাওয়ায় এখন তাঁর পরিবর্তে স্কোয়াডে নতুন কাউকে নেওয়া হবে, নাকি বর্তমান স্কোয়াড থেকেই কাউকে একাদশে রাখা হবে—এই সিদ্ধান্ত এখনো ​চূড়ান্ত হয়নি। এই প্রতিবেদন লেখার সময় নির্বাচকেরা বিষয়টি নিয়ে সভা করছিলেন। সভা শেষে জানা যাবে সিদ্ধান্ত। 

কোচ-অধিনায়কের ইচ্ছায় জুবায়ের

শুধু শাহাদাত হোসেনই নেই। নইলে রুবেল হোসেন, আবুল হাসান দুজনই আছেন ভারতের বিপক্ষে একমাত্র টেস্টের দলে। ১৪ জনের দল থেকে রুবেল আর হাসানের কথা আলাদা করে বলতে হচ্ছে, কারণ পাকিস্তানের বিপক্ষে সর্বশেষ টেস্টের দলে দুজনই ছিলেন দুই রকমভাবে। প্রথমে প্রথম টেস্টের ১৪ জনের দলটাই রেখে দেওয়া হয়েছিল দ্বিতীয় টেস্টের জন্য। পরে চোট পেয়ে রুবেল ছিটকে গেলে আসেন হাসান।

মিরপুর শেরেবাংলা স্টেডিয়ামের ওই টেস্টে হাঁটুতে চোট পেয়ে লম্বা সময়ের জন্য মাঠের বাইরে চলে যান আরেক পেসার শাহাদাত। এবার তাই প্রথম সুযোগেই দলে এলেন হাসান, কিংবা বলতে পারেন চোট কাটিয়ে রুবেলই নিয়েছেন শাহাদাতের জায়গাটা। যেভাবেই মেলান, কাল দুপুরে মিরপুর শেরেবাংলা স্টেডিয়ামে প্রধান নির্বাচক ফারুক আহমেদ ঘোষিত দল দেখে একটা বিষয় স্পষ্ট—বাংলাদেশ দলের সাম্প্রতিক ভালো পারফরম্যান্সের ছায়া পড়েছে তাতে। দলে তাই মাত্র একটাই পরিবর্তন এবং সেটা অনেকটা বাধ্য হয়েই।

নির্বাচকদের কাজটাও তাতে অনেক সহজ হয়ে গেছে বলেই মনে হচ্ছে। যদিও দল ঘোষণার সংবাদ সম্মেলনে প্রধান নির্বাচকের কথায় অন্য আভাস। লেগ স্পিনার জুবায়ের হোসেনের দলভুক্তি প্রসঙ্গে পরাজয়ের সুর তাঁর কণ্ঠে, ‘নির্বাচকেরা দল নির্বাচন করলেও তাতে অধিনায়ক এবং কোচের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মতামত থাকে। দুজনই অনেক জোরালোভাবে চেয়েছেন জুবায়ের দলে থাকুক। মাঠে যেহেতু অধিনায়কই দল পরিচালনা করেন এবং পরিকল্পনাটা করেন কোচ, আমরা তাদের মতামতকে গুরুত্ব দিয়েছি।’ ১৪ জনের দলে যখন এসেছেনই, ফারুকের আশা জুবায়ের থাকবেন একাদশেও, ‘আমরা মনে করি ভারতের বিপক্ষে টেস্টে লিখনকে (জুবায়ের) খেলানো উচিত। নইলে তার মধ্যে যে প্রতিভা আছে বলে বলা হচ্ছে, সেটা ঠিক বোঝা যাবে না।’

জুবায়ের ছাড়া আর কারও অন্তর্ভুক্তি নিয়ে মতপার্থক্য ছিল না বলেই জানা গেছে। জিম্বাবুয়ের বিপক্ষে তিন টেস্টে ২৯.২৭ গড়ে ১১ উইকেট নিয়েছিলেন জুবায়ের, সর্বশেষ টেস্টে ছিল ইনিংসে ৫ উইকেটও। তবে পাকিস্তানের বিপক্ষে টেস্ট সিরিজের দলে থাকলেও একাদশে ছিলেন না। ঢাকা টেস্টে খেলার কথা থাকলেও ম্যাচ শুরুর আগে পায়ের গোড়ালিতে সমস্যার কারণে আর খেলা হয়নি। এবার জুবায়েরের স্কোয়াডে থাকায় অনিশ্চয়তা দেখে কোচ হাথুরুসিংহে নাকি এ ব্যাপারে বোর্ড সভাপতির হস্তক্ষেপও কামনা করেছেন। প্রধান নির্বাচক অবশ্য দাবি করলেন, এ রকম কিছু তাঁর জানা নেই।

জুবায়েরের মতো লিটন কুমার দাসও পাকিস্তানের বিপক্ষে স্কোয়াডে থাকলেও কোনো টেস্টেই খেলেননি। এবারও তাঁকে নেওয়ার পেছনে অন্য একটা চিন্তাও কাজ করছে—হাতের চোটের কারণে মুশফিকের কিপিং করা নিয়ে সংশয়। ‘টেস্ট ম্যাচে দলে দুজন উইকেটকিপার থাকলে ভালো। সেটা বিবেচনা করেই লিটনকে দলে রাখা’—বলেছেন প্রধান নির্বাচক।
শুভাগত হোম চৌধুরীর শুরুটা ব্যাটসম্যান হলেও পাকিস্তানের বিপক্ষে তিনি খেলেছেন বিশেষজ্ঞ অফ স্পিনার হিসেবে। এবারও দলে সেই পরিচয়েই। সোহাগ গাজী ২৩ জনের প্রাথমিক দলেও নেই। তাই শুভাগতকেই হাতে থাকা সেরা অফ স্পিনার ধরছেন নির্বাচকেরা।

সৌম্য সরকারের জায়গায় নাসির হোসেন নয় কেন, আট ব্যাটসম্যান নিয়ে খেলার পেছনে যুক্তি—এসব প্রশ্নও উঠেছে সংবাদ সম্মেলনে। ফারুক অবশ্য দ্বিতীয় প্রসঙ্গটা ঠেলে দিলেন টিম ম্যানেজমেন্টের কোর্টে, ‘একাদশ কী হবে, সেটা কোচ-অধিনায়কই ঠিক করে। আমাদের শক্তি যেহেতু ব্যাটিংয়ে, টেস্ট ড্র করতে চাইলে আটজন ব্যাটসম্যান নিয়ে খেলার চিন্তাটাকে হয়তো ভুল বলা যাবে না। তবে আমার ব্যক্তিগত মত, সাত ব্যাটসম্যান আর চার বোলার নিয়ে খেলাই যথেষ্ট।’ আর নাসির ও সৌম্যর মধ্যে সৌম্যকে এগিয়ে রাখার কারণ হিসেবে বললেন, ‘সৌম্য তরুণ, প্রতিভাবান। ছয়-সাত বা আট, এই জায়গাগুলোর জন্য ও আদর্শ ব্যাটসম্যান। আরেকজন ব্যাটসম্যান নিলে হয়তো আমরা নাসিরের কথা চিন্তা করতাম।’

একমাত্র টেস্টের দল

বাংলাদেশের বিপক্ষে ভাজ্জি–অশ্বিন দুজনকেই চান মুরালি

দুই বছর পর টেস্ট খেলার সুযোগ হাতছানি দিচ্ছে হরভজন সিংয়ের সামনে। কিন্তু বাংলাদেশের বিপক্ষে একমাত্র টেস্টে কি ​একাদশে জায়গা মিলবে তাঁর? একটু সংশয় তো আছেই। তবে মু​ত্তিয়া মুরালিধন বলছেন, সফরের একমাত্র টেস্টে রবিচন্দ্রন অশ্বিনের পাশাপাশি হরভজনকেও খেলানো উচিত ভারতের।

সর্বশেষ অস্ট্রেলিয়ার বিপক্ষে এক স্পিনার নিয়ে খেলেছে ভারত। পার্ট টাইম স্পিনার দিয়ে কাজ সামলে নিয়েছে। ভারতের গত চারটি সিরিজই ছিল দেশের বাইরে। দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকা, নিউজিল্যান্ড, ইংল্যান্ড, অস্ট্রেলিয়া—যেখানে পেসাররাই ছিলেন মূল ভরসা। সর্বশেষ নিজেদের মাটিতে যে টেস্ট খেলেছে ভারত, সেই মুম্বাই টেস্টে দুজন স্পিনার থাকলেও অফ স্পিনার ছিলেন একজন—অশ্বিন। অন্যজন বাঁ হাতি স্পিনার—প্রজ্ঞান ওঝা।

বোলিং আক্রমণের বৈচিত্র্যের কারণেই একজন অফস্পিনার একজন বাঁ হাতি স্পিনার। তবে মুরালি মনে করেন, বাংলাদেশের বিপক্ষে দুজন অফ স্পিনার খেলানোতে কোনো বাধা নেই, ‘অশ্বিন বেশ ধারাবাহিকভাবে খেলে যাচ্ছে। এখন হরভজনও ফিরল। আমি মনে করি বাংলাদেশের বিপক্ষে ভাজ্জির খেলার ভালো সুযোগ আছে। একাদশে অনায়াসে দুজন অফ স্পিনারকে খেলানো যায়।

গত আইপিএলে ১৫ ম্যাচে ১৮ উইকেট নিয়ে মুম্বাইকে চ্যাম্পিয়ন বানানোয় বড় ভূমিকা পালন করেছেন। উইকেট নেওয়ার দিক দিয়ে স্পিনারদের মধ্যে দুইয়ে ছিলেন তিনি। সাম্প্রতিক ফর্মই শুধু নয়, ভাজ্জির বিশাল অভিজ্ঞতার কথাও মনে করিয়ে দিচ্ছেন টেস্ট-ওয়ানডের সর্বকালের সর্বোচ্চ উইকেটের মালিক, ‘শুধু আইপিএল নয়, অন্যান্য টুর্নামেন্টেও ও দুর্দান্ত বোলিং করছে। টেস্টে ওর চার শর বেশি উইকেট আছে। আপনার দলের দুই সেরা বোলারই যদি অফ স্পিনারও হয়, তবুও তাদের একসঙ্গে খেলানো উচিত।’

মুরালি আসল কারণটাই বলেছেন কি না, সেটা অবশ্য বার্তা সংস্থা পিটিআইয়ের এই খবরে বোঝা যাচ্ছে না। এমনিতে বাংলাদেশ দলে বাঁ হাতি ব্যাটসম্যানের আধিক্য। তামিম ইকবাল, ইমরুল কায়েস, সৌম্য সরকার, মুমিনুল হক, সাকিব আল হাসান—সবাই বাঁ হাতি। এ ক্ষেত্রে অফ স্পিনাররা বাড়তি সুবিধা পাবেন। কারণ তাঁদের অফস্পিন বাঁহাতি ব্যাটসম্যানদের জন্য লেগ স্পিন হয়ে যাবে। দুজন অফ স্পিনারকে খেলাতেই পারে ভারত। 

‘আমাদের জন্য অনেক বড় সিরিজ’

পাকিস্তান সিরিজের অনেক আগেই বাংলাদেশকে ফেবারিট বলে ঘোষণা দিয়ে দিয়েছিলেন। এবার আর সেটা বলছেন না। সিরিজ জয়ের সম্ভাবনায় এগিয়ে রাখছেন ভারতকেই। তবে মহেন্দ্র সিং ধোনির দল যত বড় ক্রিকেট পরাশক্তিই হোক, তাদের বিপক্ষেও সিরিজ জয়টাকে অসম্ভব মনে করেন না সাকিব আল হাসান। কাল প্রথম আলোকে দেওয়া সাক্ষাৎকারে টেস্ট ও টি-টোয়েন্টির এক নম্বর অলরাউন্ডার বললেন, ভারতকে হারাতে পারলে সেটা হবে বাংলাদেশের ক্রিকেটের সবচেয়ে বড় অর্জন—
. ভারত সিরিজ তো প্রায় চলে এল। আপনাদের প্রস্তুতিও শুরু হয়ে যাবে কাল (আজ) থেকেই। প্রস্তুতিতে কোন দিকটায় জোর দিতে হবে বলে মনে করেন?
সাকিব আল হাসান: সব দিকেই সমান নজর দিতে হবে। আলাদাভাবে কাজ করতে হবে, এমন কোনো দিক নেই। ভারতের মতো দলের বিপক্ষে ভালো ফলাফল করতে হলে ব্যাটিং, বোলিং, ফিল্ডিং সবই ভালো হতে হবে।
. বিশ্বকাপে দুই দলের সর্বশেষ ম্যাচে অনেক বড় ব্যবধানে হেরেছিল বাংলাদেশ। সেই ম্যাচের কোনো প্রভাব কি পড়তে পারে এবারের সিরিজে?
সাকিব: দেখেন, এটা সম্পূর্ণই একটা নতুন সিরিজ। আমার মনে হয় না ওই ম্যাচের কোনো প্রভাব এখানে পড়বে। অন্তত আমার মধ্যে পড়বে না। দলের অন্যদের কথা বলতে পারব না।
. দেশের মাটিতে খেলা। সেই সুবিধা তো পাবে বাংলাদেশ...
সাকিব: অবশ্যই আমরা তা পাব। দেশের মাটিতে বাংলাদেশ বরাবরই ভালো দল। আমার বিশ্বাস, দলের সবাই ইতিবাচক মানসিকতা নিয়ে খেলবে। তা ছাড়া পাকিস্তান সিরিজে আমরা ভালো খেলেছি। মাঝে খুব বেশি বিরতি না থাকায় সেই স্মৃতিটা এখনো তাজা। বেশির ভাগ খেলোয়াড় এই সময়টায় খেলার মধ্যে থাকায় প্রস্তুতিতেও কারও ঘাটতি থাকার কথা না।
. পেস বোলিং নিয়ে কিছুটা সমস্যায় পড়তে হয়েছিল পাকিস্তান সিরিজে। এবার কি সেটা কাটিয়ে ওঠা যাবে?
সাকিব: নির্বাচকেরা নিশ্চয়ই বিষয়টা মাথায় রাখছেন। তবে আমার মনে হয় না এই সিরিজে কোনো সমস্যা হবে। বেশির ভাগ পেসারই এখন ফিট। আর যদি কেউ ফিট না-ও থাকে, যারা আছে তাদের নিয়েই খেলতে হবে। এ ছাড়া তো কিছু করার নেই।
. সে ক্ষেত্রে স্পিনারদের কি একটু বাড়তি দায়িত্ব নিতে হবে বলে মনে করেন?
সাকিব: আসলে দায়িত্ব সবাইকেই নিতে হবে। টেস্ট ম্যাচ জিততে হলে আপনাকে প্রতিপক্ষের ২০টি উইকেট নিতে হবে। সেটা একা পেসার বা স্পিনারদের পক্ষে সম্ভব না। সবাইকে সবার জায়গা থেকে ভালো করতে হবে।
. ভারতের ব্যাটিং লাইনআপ যেকোনো দলের জন্যই ভীতিকর। আপনারাও নিশ্চয়ই তাদের ব্যাটিংয়ের দিকেই চোখ রাখবেন বেশি...
সাকিব: এটা ঠিক যে তাদের ব্যাটিং ভালো। তাই বলে শুধু ব্যাটিংয়ের দিকে চোখ রাখলেই হবে না। বিশ্বকাপে ভারতের বোলাররা খুবই ভালো বল করেছে। দলটার ফিল্ডিংও বেশ ভালো। টেস্টে তারা এশিয়াতে সেরা, ওয়ানডেতেও বেশ শক্তিশালী দল। কাজেই ভালো ফল পেতে হলে ওদের সব দিক দিয়েই হারাতে হবে।
. বিশেষ কোনো ব্যাটসম্যান বা বোলারের কথা কি বলবেন, যাঁকে নিয়ে আপনাদের আলাদা করে ভাবতে হতে পারে?
সাকিব: না। ওদের সবাই ম্যাচ জেতাতে পারে। কোনো একজনকে নিয়ে আলাদা করে ভাবাটা হয়তো ভুলই হবে। তবে ম্যাচ জেতানোর মতো খেলোয়াড় এখন আমাদেরও অনেক আছে। ওরাও নিশ্চয়ই আমাদের সেভাবেই দেখছে।

'We need to work harder'

Rubel Hossain must be a relieved man. The sexual allegations that were brought against him were finally put to rest by a Dhaka court yesterday and he was discharged.

However, while he has managed to win one battle, another remains. The pacer now has to ensure that he recovers from his side-strain in time for the India series which begins on June 10.

The Bangladesh national cricket team attended their first camp for the India series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium yesterday with the members of the preliminary squad going through various fitness tests.
While Rubel couldn't attend the session since he had to be present at court, the team management will hope that the bowler can ace the second series of fitness tests due to take place today. Bangladesh's pace attack seems to be hanging by a thread, as both their key bowlers are struggling with injuries.

Apart from Rubel, Shafiul Islam is the other bowler the team management will be looking to. Shafiul though is still recovering from a finger injury. That leaves the team with Mohammad Shahid and Abul Hasan.
While Shahid did perform well in the last series, he took a major share of the burden due to injuries to Rubel and Shahadat Hossain and that's something the team management will hope does not happen again.
Apart from Rubel, Sabbir Rahman was the other member of the preliminary squad who wasn't present yesterday. He is currently in India for his father's treatment.

Trainer Mario Villavarayan expressed his optimism following Bangladesh's fitness session yesterday.
"It's been almost a year since I have been here and I am happy to see the change in attitude and their training habits in the last twelve months. But this year is going to be another busy year. So we have to keep working hard like we did before the World Cup," said the Sri Lankan.

"Taking into consideration that we played a lot of cricket recently, I am satisfied with the players. But there's still a lot of work to do," added Villavarayan.

Almost all the players expected to take part in the lone Test match against India from June 10 will be playing in the last round of the Bangladesh Cricket League which begins on May 24. It will be a round which could well provide a clear understanding of the players' injuries.

With India's next assignment is a tour to Bangladesh, it could be justified for the two-time World Champions to feel it might be the right time to rest the likes of Kohli, Yadav, Dhoni and a few others with tours coming up in the recent future. India had spent over 4 months in the land down-under, first playing against Australia in a Test Series, then an ODI triangular including England. The World Cup was a near-two month affair, and then the IPL began at home.

Apparently India's biggest star Virat Kohli had asked to be rested for the tour to Bangladesh, and a few others might be raising their voices in a couple of days, formally. At the current scenario, Bangladesh might be facing a 'second-string' India in June at home.

It is not for the first time that India had not sent its full-strength side to Bangladesh for a tour. Just about a year ago, the likes of Kohli, Dhoni, Ashwin, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan were rested for a 3-match ODI series against the Tigers, which India won by a 2-0 margin. One side of the stone brings historic references which logically enhances the willingness for India to do the same this time round as well.

A retrospection on last year's context from Bangladesh's point of view portrays a story like this:

Bangladesh had lost to Sri Lanka early in 2014, starting from Tests, to ODIs to T20s. Amid a few injury concerns, disciplinary issues, transition in terms of change in coaching staff, suffering unexpected loses to Hong Kong in the T20 World Cup at home and Afghanistan in the Asia Cup, Bangladesh could not have been at a worse situation in terms of form and positive mental faculties. There were rumors of unhealthy internal clashes between players, most of it a direct reflection of the string of defeats and mostly the manner of them. Day in and day out, Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim had the same words for the media,"We could not perform to our potential, hopeful about the next match", and that elusive next match never came.

India won the first ODI of the 2014 series in a closely-fought battle, and won the second by defending 105 runs, helped by a freak-show from Stuart Binny who ended up with figures of 6 wickets for 4 runs. The third ODI was washed out. While India gave debuts to a couple of players on the tour, Bangladesh had two debutantes as well: Mohammad Mithun and Taskin Ahmed.

After reaching new lows in terms of the losing streak, the Tigers finally got back to winning ways after drubbing Zimbabwe 3-0 in the Test Series at home, and 5-0 in the ODI series. A few new faces had made their presence felt in the squad by then, and a wind of change took place with the new coaching-staff in charge. The World Cup campaign gave new life to team senior Mahmudullah, who ended up being the 7th highest run-scorer in the competition. It gave pacer Rubel Hossain a sniff at finally bringing out his fearsome side and display his skills to the World. With Masrafe's return as ODI and T20 skipper, Bangladesh unfolded new highs with newbies Soumya, Sabbir and Taskin contributing to a quarter final berth the World Cup campaign.

Pakistan came weeks after the World Cup, and Bangladesh played arguably the best bilateral series in their cricketing history after whitewashing the visitors 3-0 in the ODIs, 1-0 in T20s and even managing a draw in the eventually lost Test series from dire circumstances. Mushfiqur had already established himself as Bangladesh's run-machine, Tamim Iqbal seemed to have left his days of depression far behind, and many hungry Tigers like Liton Kumar, Rony Talukdar and Mustafizur Rahman waited their time in the bench. Bangladesh, in current context could be a threat to any top-ranked side, especially at home. And much of it had again to do with the run of wins the Tigers managed that paved a route of confidence and aggression never seen before, at least collectively. The skills of the players had finally began to translate into results, much more evident in the shorter formats of the game. Bangladesh have already moved up to number 8 in the ODI rankings, and are in serious contention for the Champion's Trophy spot for the first time ever.

In order to maintain the spot though, the Tigers need to keep winning against a few more top-ranked sides, and matches against India could be the first stepping stone. 'Nothing is fair in love and war', and in a battle of survival, there can be no compromise. Bangladesh would love to host a 'second-string' India at home: because what the Tigers want is victory, and maybe in the process scare away the thoughts from the minds of the 'big-guns' of not sending a full-strength side to the Tigers den.

Kohli may skip Bangladesh tour

The Indian team is likely to travel to Bangladesh with a new Test captain.
Virat Kohli has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India to exclude him from the tour as he is keen on taking a break following a long cricket season, reports the Indian Express.
It is learnt that the team is unlikely to include a head coach with the board yet to shortlist names for the role vacated by Duncan Fletcher. The tour to Bangladesh begins on June 10 with India set to play a lone Test and three ODIs.

Kohli replaced Mahendra Singh Dhoni as full-time Test captain after the long-standing skipper pulled the curtains on his career in the long format following the Boxing Day Test at the MCG last year.
But sources have informed The Indian Express that Kohli has already spoken to BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur about wanting rest once the Indian Premier League gets over.

Sources in the BCCI said that barring Fletcher, the rest of the coaching staff, who were there in Australia, are likely to be retained with Ravi Shastri set to remain as team director alongside Sanjay Bangar, Bharat Arun and R Sridhar.

Kohli, though, is not the only senior cricketer with hesitations over touring Bangladesh next month. The BCCI senior selection committee headed by Sandeep Patil is scheduled to pick the squad on May 20, and it’s likely that they will go with a second-string outfit, an outcome that the Bangladesh Cricket Board is dreading.

‘Kohli has confirmed that he wants a break. Many senior players don’t want to travel to Bangladesh as they already have been touring a lot over the past one year. Few of them have requested for a break but the BCB wants at least some of the key players to be sent to Bangladesh as it will keep some interest alive with the TV viewers,’ a BCCI source said.

The source also confirmed that Fletcher’s replacement is unlikely to be named in the coming days. ‘We haven’t short-listed names of potential candidates who we think can coach the Indian team. The process is still in progress and it will take another month or so.’

Following the short tour to Bangladesh, India will travel to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka over the next two months. But for now, it will be interesting to see who takes over from Kohli.
Ajinkya Rahane could be in the fray despite not having much experience of leading a team at the senior level, domestic or otherwise.

But there is no clear front-runner in the race yet. Cheteshwar Pujara, who returned to India after a stint with Yorkshire in the county circuit, has led India A on a few occasions but hasn’t been among the runs in international cricket of late.

Rohit Sharma has won an IPL with Mumbai Indians while Suresh Raina has led India in the ODIs, but neither have impressed enough in five-day cricket to be handed the responsibility of leading the Test team.

Mushfiq’s captaincy secured for now

Bangladesh Test skipper Mushfiqur Rahim can be rest assured that his captaincy won’t be taken away in 2015, said Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan on Saturday.
Mushfiq’s captaincy came under scrutiny during the recently concluded two-match Test series against Pakistan.

The decision to bat first in the second Test match where wickets turned out into a batting paradise after an hour in the first day, left the Bangladeshi bowlers helpless and everyone else surprised over his captaincy philosophy.

Pakistan exploited the gift to the fullest and recorded their first win in the series and in the process clinched the Test series after being clean swept in the three match one-day internationals and lone Twenty20 under the helm of Masharfee bin Murtaza.
‘There is no chance of replacing him [Mushfiq] this year,’ Nazmul Hasan told reporters at his residence on Saturday.
‘We don’t have any better option than him,’ said Nazmul.
‘I was in London during the second Test match and after we took fielding instead of batting that also raised questions on my mind.

‘I called Sakib [al Hasan] over phone, though he was not the captain. He told me that it was a combined decision and if the pace bowlers were not injured and we had got early breakthroughs things could have been different,’ said the BCB boss.

Mushfiq was replaced from the captaincy duties of ODI and Twenty20 in September 2014 after his defensive approach was often being criticised.
After replacing him, Mashrafee changed the face of Tigers ODI side with a 5-0 win over Zimbabwe in November in 2014.

Mashrafee followed it up with a World Cup quarter-final finish earlier this year and the 3-0 and 1-0 wins in ODI and Twenty20 series respectively over Pakistan.

In the new split-captaincy era, Mushfiq led Bangladesh to a 3-0 Test series win over Zimbabwe in October-November last year, but the 0-1 loss to Pakistan has again raised questions about his position as the captain.
However, Nazmul believes that instead of chopping the wicket-keeper batsman from the captaincy, time has come to consider whether he is taking extra burden of performing three jobs at a time.
‘I think it is very demanding to continue with all the responsibilities.’
‘To keep wickets for the whole day and then batting along with guiding a unit for five days can be taxing for anyone.

‘Mushfiq is our best batsman but we could not get his batting properly in the last Test match due to his injury during keeping and that harmed us a lot.’

‘If he has to leave any particular aspect than I would suggest it should be his keeping,’ Nazmul said.
